For vintage Seiko lovers, the 6309-7040/49 “Turtle” diver is a must for any collection. It is still Seiko’s top selling diver to date, and even inspired a rerelease in 2015. It’s instantly recognizable, and a personal favorite. Production began in 1976 and continued through 1988 when Seiko transitioned over to the 7002 model. However, in 1982 a slimmer 6309 emerged, and possibly served as a testing ground to gauge interest in the next generation of Seiko divers. Of course I’m referring to the 6309-7290, or what many collectors refer to as the “Slim Turtle.” It’s likely that you’ve seen this model while perusing  forums or auction sites, but in almost every instance they have been fitted with inferior aftermarket dials, hands, and bezel inserts. A shorter production run paired with a smaller market distribution makes finding an original “slim” quite a challenge. In fact, this example from October of ‘87 is the first original we’ve acquired and been able to offer. The dial is immaculate. The soft matte black is even throughout, and the printed text is crisp with no fading in the bright red “water resist” lettering. The stippled luminous plots show no degradation, and only a slight cream patina. The hands have aged well with only minor oxidation, and no visible corrosion. The bezel rotates with a firm click in either direction, and the insert bears only light wear with the original lume pip and acrylic lens still in place. The case appears unpolished overall, but it may have been touched up at some point. The 6309A is keeping near perfect time post service, and the crown and case back both screw down tightly to protect it. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal and strap, and truly one of the nicest original examples we’ve seen. We’ve paired it with a rich olive green heavy NATO that pairs nicely with the dial and offers comfort and security on the wrist. Whether your looking for the missing piece in your collection, or a smaller alternative to the original, this is sure to be a favorite.
