Needing little in the way of an introduction, Seiko’s H558-5000, or “Arnie” as it’s more commonly referred to, is one of the few pieces that have me throw my “no quartz” rule right out of the shop window. Introduced in 1982, it was the first ever diver to have an analog and digital display with a chronograph and an alarm. It is a beast of a watch at nearly 46mm including the shroud, and so it seems fitting that it would eventually become synonymous with it’s biggest fan, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnie, with a fairly well documented collection of great watches already, rode out most of the 80’s with his favorite Seiko strapped to his wrist. It even saw significant screen time in the movies “Predator” and “Commando.” Considered by collectors to be a fringe member of the “Tuna” family of Seiko divers, an honest, fully working example can be a bit hard to come by these days as they were often worn hard by those for whom it was designed. The shroud is plastic and can become brittle with age, and moisture intrusion or a dead battery left sitting can destroy the movement. But, for those willing to be patient, a good example is certainly worth waiting for. This example from April of ‘87 is unbelievable. It’s completely original including the hardlex crystal and GL831/22 strap. The shroud is the original, and is held in place by the original screws and collars. The corners and bevels are still crisp, and bears only light wear throughout. The bezel rotates with a firm click in either direction, and the insert has only a few minor blemishes. The hardlex crystal is nearly perfect, bearing only a couple of slight hairlines on the surface. The dial and depth meter are perfect and without staining or fading. The original luminous plots have no visible patina, and the hands are perfect. The reverse “lollipop” second hand is perfect, showing no chipping or paint loss. The digital display is crisp, and all functions are working correctly including the incandescent bulb and chiming alarm. The case is unpolished and shows only minimal wear as it’s been protected by the shroud. The crown and case back both screw down securely. The original strap is in great condition except for a pull through between the fourth and fifth slot. I wanted to leave it as original as possible and it can still be worn comfortably on the third or fifth slot (7.25” and 7.75” respectively) It ships with the original inner box, collar, hang tag, and slot tag. As setting this watch is somewhat involved, we’ve added a link too the instructions below. All of the electronic components were carefully disassembled and cleaned and the analog portion was cleaned and serviced. A new battery was installed as well. Clearly one of the best examples we’ve ever seen, I’m sure it will become a centerpiece in any collection..
