As production of the 6309 ended in 1988, Seiko introduced it’s next generation of 150m Sport Divers by way of the 7002. It is the direct predecessor to the SKX line of today, and owning one can feel like the perfect blend of old and new. This example from August of ‘91 is in amazing condition, and a veritable checklist of what to look for. The case is unpolished with only light signs of wear throughout, and its original finishes and bevels are still clearly visible. The bezel action is silky smooth, and the rarer “Pepsi” insert is nearly perfect with just the lightest touch of UV fading. The dial is absolute mint. It’s matte black with rectangular markers at every hour except the 12. There, two opposing triangles meet at a point just above the silver SEIKO logo. The luminous material, in this case promethium, has developed a silvery khaki gray patina that is even throughout. The hands are recognizable in design, and also sport a rich even patina. They are free of corrosion or oxidation, and have retained their original polished finish. A large screw down crown sits at the 4 o’clock position between two protruding crown guards. The case back bears the signature “Tsunami” logo at center, and the lightning bolt marking it’s Daini heritage. It’s completely original right down to the hardlex crystal. There are a couple of very light scuffs, but it was too nice to consider changing out. We’ve paired it with a light gray RAF NATO for a tactical, but comfortable finish that lets the dial and bezel do the talking. It is truly a stunning example of Seiko’s fourth generation diver. The 7002 is a date only calibre, and post service, this one is keeping near perfect time. With so many examples fitted with modified and aftermarket parts, opportunities to own an original example are becoming increasingly rare. Don’t miss yours.
