Seiko produced no shortage of sport divers in the late 60's and 70's, but few so memorable and as sought after as the “Rally” variants. So named for their checkered bezels and (often) dials, they are an instantly recognizable combination of color and cool. This example from August of 1970 is no exception. The dial is a perfect silver sunburst with stepped applied markers finished in black and silver striping. Framing it, a steeply angled chapter with hour and minute blocking, and luminous plots on the hours. The chapter has developed a deep copper patina that is even throughout, and nicely contrasts the dial. The hour and minute hands are polished and beveled batons with clean, original luminous. The blaze orange sweep shows no fading, and is free of chipping or paint loss. The barrel tonneau case is unpolished with sharp edges and the original finishes are still clearly visible. The knurled friction bezel rotates in either direction with smooth resistance, but enough tension for keeping it in place once set. The “count up” insert is checked in silver and baby blue, and shows a fair amount of fade and wear. We’ve paired it with a supple “Tropic Sport” style strap for clean period finish that’s comfortable on the wrist. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service, the hacking 6106C is keeping near perfect time. A Seiko icon with rich patina and a stunning dial, this one is sure to be a fast favorite on any roster.
