1972 Seiko 4006-6031 Automatic “Bell-Matic” 17j Day/Date
1972 Seiko 4006-6031 Automatic “Bell-Matic” 17j Day/Date
The first Bell-Matics were released in November of 1966, and over the next 12 years a wide variety of styles and color combinations would guarantee that those looking for a robust wrist alarm with undeniable presence could find exactly that. Seiko’s 4005 and 4006 calibre movements were available in 17j export and 27j domestic market versions (there’s even short lived 21j variant), both of which offer incredible reliability decades after they were first produced. From classic dress styles to colorful casuals, there’s a “Bell” to suit any collection. This 6031 from April of ‘72 is a casual classic with broad appeal and a versatile layout. The 39mm cushion case has soft contours, and a slimmer profile than is typical of most Bell references. The dial is a deep navy blue with a subtle sunburst beneath a glossy lacquer finish. It’s set with polished applied baguette markers with black enamel tips and stepped luminous plots. Polished and beveled batons track and hours and minutes, and a long slender sweep counts the seconds. Framing the dial is a wide inner bezel with a bright red cutaway cursor that reveals the dropped minute chapter beneath. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service is keeping near perfect time. The bell has a bright crisp tone, and the cursor ring has been carefully aligned for accurate setting. The date can be quickset by pressing the alarm toggle pusher, and the day is semi-quickset via the crown. It comes attached to the original “Coffin” link bracelet for a slick, seamless finish, and is ready to make some noise in your rotation.
