1979 Seiko 2625-0019 Quartz 150m Diver
1979 Seiko 2625-0019 Quartz 150m Diver
A growing trend toward smaller divers and watches in general has been developing for quite a while, and we’ve taken note. With that in mind, this is our jumping off point, and our dial feet have landed on this 2625-0019. A companion piece to the 7548-7000, it was an opportunity to service a new movement, and share here what has to be the nicest example around. From June of 1979, this 150m stunner is a black and gold beauty that’s just about flawless. There are even remnants of the blue case back sticker still covering the “Tsunami” case back. The case styling is reminiscent of the 6159-7000’s, and the factory finishes and corners are still razor sharp. It’s topped with a coin edge bezel with deep grooves that’s easy to rotate in either direction with a firm click, and the glossy black insert is virtually spotless. The dial is a textured matte black with a date window at three that can be quick set via the crown in the second position. The hour markers are polished gold frames surrounding ample luminous plots, and the hour and minute hands are broad gold swords with giant luminous windows. In contrast, the second hand is a sandblasted silver broad arrow. It’s unpolished and completely original, including the domed hardlex crystal. I carefully polished it with cerium oxide to remove a few scratches. The crown and case back both screw down securely with ample threading. Post service, the hacking 2625 is keeping perfect time and a new battery was installed. We’ve paired it with a soft gray “paratrooper” nylon strap for a comfortable and secure fit and finish. Without the crown, the diameter is about 33mm, and 37mm with. If a big and bold smaller diver with Seiko bonafides, and in near mint condition is on your list, this is how you check that box.
