1981 Seiko 6309-7040 Automatic 150m Diver “Turtle” (Suwa)
1981 Seiko 6309-7040 Automatic 150m Diver “Turtle” (Suwa)
As important as any watch can be too the efficacy of a brand, the 6309-7040/9 is a perfect delivery of intention. It's as rugged and hard wearing as it is aesthetically satisfying. Even as the first "Turtles" released in 1976 turned 48 this year, one thing is certain... they never get old. This example from March of ‘81 is no exception, and marks the last year that production was completed entirely in Japan at Seiko’s Suwa division. The Suwa “S” logo can be seen just above the six o’clock marker, and for many collectors, it’s the first thing to look for when considering an acquisition. The textured matte black dial is clean, and the luminous plots have developed a light “sand” patina that is even throughout with the exception of a spot of color on two hour marker. The hour and minute hands have retained their original polished finish, with very little oxidation present. The bezel rotates smoothly in either direction, and while the insert shows moderate wear throughout, it is even, and the markings are still clear and legible. The crown and case back screw down tightly, and the 6309A is a near bulletproof workhorse ready to provide many more years of reliable service. Post service, it’s keeping near perfect time, and the day and date can be independently quickset via the crown. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and we’ve paired it with a reproduction GL-831 flat vent strap for a fit and finish very close to the original. A true Seiko icon, and still their top selling diver to date, it’s a must have for any collector, and sure to be the front runner on any roster.
