1968 Seiko 6106-8100 Automatic 70m Sport Diver (Proof)
Seiko's earliest sport divers are the quintessential tool watch. Understated and minimalist layouts with a militaristic edge, and bulletproof construction. To the hard core collector, they are sought after relics of Seiko history to be appreciated for their simplicity and reliability. Only produced for a few years, acquiring your own can prove quite a challenge. This silver stunner from July of '68 is a knockout, and among the earliest examples produced. The case is a contoured tonneau that's unpolished with sharp corners and its factory finishes still clearly visible. It's fitted with a rotating outer friction style bezel and a count up insert with light, even wear. The insert printing remains in sharp contrast, and free of any fading. Beneath it is a silvery white sunburst dial with a glossy lacquer finish and applied luminous indexes. It’s beautifully balanced with only two lines of text, and a framed day/date window at three o’clock. The hands are lengthy polished batons with ample luminous windows that have developed the same creamy patina as the hour markers and bezel pip. The 6106B features hacking seconds and a quick set function for the date. The day can be semi-quick set. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal and post service, is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a heavily grained Bordeaux leather with black stitching for a versatile and comfortable fit and finish. If a stripped down, bare bones, vintage tool diver is on your list, this one will not disappoint.
