1965 Seiko 6206-8010 Seikomatic Day/Date 26j (Crown Dolphin)
Seiko's "Seikomatic" line up from the 1960's offers some of the cleanest layouts and most enduring case architecture to come out of era. Mid-century modernity and minimalism that's just as relevant today as it was when they were introduced more than 50 years ago. This 8010 from October of ‘65 is no exception, and a stunning example of Seiko’s superior layouts. The dial is a crisp silvery white linen beneath a glossy lacquer finish. A brushed silver stripe creates a wide horizon line that houses both the offset day and date windows, and sleek lettering with an automotive allure. It’s set with polished and quartered applied “monument” indices, and a thin black crosshair splits the dial. Framing the dial is a raised polished chapter that seamlessly transitions to the bezel and creates a truly “all dial” aesthetic. Produced before 1966, Seiko’s “Dolphin” motif is embossed on the case back along with a large three pointed crown that denoted its water resistance and flagship status. The case has tight lines and sharp angles that give it an almost faceted appearance. Stout, short lugs and a thicker profile provide a well balanced build that wears well on any wrist. It is completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service, it’s keeping near perfect time. We’ve attached a soft gray suede with white stitching that stands back and let’s the dial be the show. Well past the half century mark, it is incredibly well preserved. It is as dependable as it is versatile, and opportunities to own clean examples are quickly diminishing due to demand. Don’t wait on this one.
