1972 Seiko 6138-3009 Automatic Chronograph “Jumbo”
1972 Seiko 6138-3009 Automatic Chronograph “Jumbo”
There's no mistaking how the 6138-3009 got its nickname, and at 42mm the "Jumbo" has certainly earned it. It's size, however, is in scale with its sophistication. The matte black tri-level dial is trimmed in lean contrasting markers, and is framed perfectly by the understated and steeply angled chapter. The white hour and minute baton style hands are a seamless addition, but its the sunny yellow chronograph hands that add balance and an eye catching color pop. The case is well detailed, and to say it has wrist presence is an understatement. Contoured end links perfectly integrate the bracelet which provides a comfortable and seamless finish. Independent day and date quickset, and the option to manually wind the mainspring give the 6138 clear advantages over its predecessor. The chronograph functions are crisp and responsive, and post service, it’s keeping near perfect time. This example from April of ‘72 is completely original, and has been fitted with a genuine NOS Seiko hardlex crystal. Crisp and unpolished, its a timeless classic bound to be a front runner in any collection.
