Seiko's 6138 was the sophomore release to the 6139 and added a few features lacking on the former. In addition to a rolling 12 hour register for the chronograph, it could now be manually wound at the crown, and the day and date could be quick set independently. The "bullhead" earned it's name when Seiko decided to rotate the movement 90 degrees within the case, and position the crown and chronograph pushers at the top of the case creating a resemblance to a bull's horns. At nearly 44mm, it is truly a beast befitting of horns, and the gradient brown dial, gold sub registers and "root beer" bezel offer an excess of 1970's appeal. This example from September of ‘74 checks all the boxes. The dial is perfect, and the luminous material on the hands and markers is still bright white and free of degradation. The hour and minute hands show no chipping or paint loss, and the chronograph sweep is still a vivid and bright yellow. The bezel insert does show some moderate wear, but it has faded to a golden honey color that truly sets it apart. The case is unpolished with a few visible blemishes, but the original factory finishes are still intact, and the lines and corners are sharp. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and is even still attached to the original “Fishbone” bracelet. It’s keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. Grab this bull by the horns before it’s gone for good.
