1972 Seiko 6139-6005 Automatic Chronograph “True Pogue” (Resist)
For vintage Seiko fans, it doesn't get any more iconic than the "Pogue." After purchasing his own 6139 at an exchange on base, Col. William Pogue trained for 6 months with his trusty new companion strapped to his wrist. It proved a trustworthy and reliable tool throughout rigorous simulations, and so was taken along side his NASA issued Omega Speedmaster Professional when he began his actual mission aboard Skylab. Today, “Pogue” is a catch all term used to describe any of the several variants within the 6139-60XX family, but for discerning collectors, only one stands out as the true “Pogue.” The very model that the Colonel himself wore during simulations and subsequently into orbit: A yellow “Resist” dial 6139-6005. His personal Seiko was sold at auction several years ago to one very fortunate new owner. This example from April of ‘72 is close as it gets to the original... Albeit, in much better condition. The deep, golden yellow sunburst dial is amazing. It has developed an incredible, almost tropical patina that shows that appears almost red in color throughout. The rotating inner bezel is a bright, vivid yellow, and rotates smoothly in either direction via the crown. The outer bezel insert does show some light wear and even fading, but the markings are still clearly legible. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are still somewhat visible. It comes attached to the original non-tapered “H” link bracelet for a seamless finish, and is completely original aside from a replacement crystal and a replacement end link for the bracelet. Post service it’s keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are flawless. A “True Pogue” is an absolute grail for almost every collector, and this one is certain to be a centerpiece in any lineup.
