1973 Seiko 6138-0017 Automatic Chronograph “UFO/Yachtman”
1973 Seiko 6138-0017 Automatic Chronograph “UFO/Yachtman”
The term "Yachtman" appears to have been of questionable origin as it pertains to this particular chronograph, and clearly because it looks much closer to home trackside, far from any body of water suitable for yachting. Without a doubt, it is the embodiment of 1970's racing for the wrist. The case is a beastly 44.5mm of sloping contours and subtle corners. The bezel is the standout feature here in black with a metallic, fiery red tachymetric scale. Beneath it, a steep glossy black chapter frames the matte black dial and contrasting sub registers in a soft silver. The larger of the two counting minutes, and it's smaller partner above tracks up to 12 hours. The hour and minute hands are bright white batons with tapered tips, and a blaze orange sweep totals the seconds. The luminous material is the original and bears a visible patina throughout. The 6138 offers independent quick set of both the day and date, and can be manually wound. The chronograph functions are crisp and responsive and post service, its keeping near perfect time. It’s unpolished, and completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal, and comes attached to the original “fishbone” bracelet in stainless steel. From February of ‘73, it’s hands down the best example we’ve had to offer, and sure to be a “fast” favorite in any lineup.
