1977 JDM Seiko 6138-0030 5 Sports Speed Timer “Champagne Kakume”
1977 JDM Seiko 6138-0030 5 Sports Speed Timer “Champagne Kakume”
In Japanese, "Kakume" translates roughly to "square eyes." And like two square, matte black eyes, the sub registers of this massive chronograph stare back at you from their recessed position beneath the flaxen champagne dial. This example from January of ‘77 is unreal. The dial is virtually flawless, and captivates from every angle. Its satin sunburst finish is framed in a fiery orange minute chapter, and set with polished applied markers striped in black. The square sub registers are a deep black, and matte finished with white and gold print. The hour and minute hands are unique to this JDM “5 Sports” variant, and are tapered polished batons with black striping. The chronograph hands have retained their original vivid orange hue and standout beautifully against the surrounding black and gold. The matching bezel insert bears only a few very minor blemishes, and crisp color throughout. The case is unpolished, and the original finishes and corners are still quite crisp. Aside from a replacement crystal, it is completely original, and post service, it’s keeping near perfect time. The chronograph functions are smooth and responsive with a snappy reset. It comes attached to the original JDM “H” link bracelet and Speed Timer clasp, but as it was a bit short, we’ve installed an adjustable clasp extension to allow for any needed length. As the demand for vintage Seiko chronographs continues to grow, opportunities to acquire scarce JDM models in this condition are few and far between to say the least. Don’t wait on this one.
