For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From February of ‘73, this is a fantastic example overall. The golden sunburst dial has just a touch of character. A few light “freckles” mark its surface, and the edge of the sub register shows oxidation, however, the color and finish is even throughout. The hour and minute hands are free of corrosion and have retained their original polished finish. The luminous material on the markers and hands is still bright white and free of any degradation. The chronograph hands are bright red, but the sweep has some light chipping in the “tail” portion. The inner bezel is a vivid even yellow with no fading from UV exposure. The case is unpolished and the original finishes are still clearly visible. The outer tachymetric bezel in a rich metallic red and blue shows only light wear and subtle fading throughout. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. We’ve paired it with a rough cut gray canvas that provides a comfortable and versatile finish. Aside from a replacement mineral crystal, it’s completely original, and a great opportunity to own a watch that has reached near “grail” status among collectors.
