1986 JDM Seiko 7C43-6A00 Quartz 200m Professional Diver (Titanium)
1986 JDM Seiko 7C43-6A00 Quartz 200m Professional Diver (Titanium)
As production of the 7548 came to a close around 1985, Seiko delivered it’s follow up 7 series quartz movement the following year in 1986. Unlike the 7548, which was built on the 6309 platform (in fact, most of its calendar side components were interchangeable), the 7C43 was a breed all its own. Engineered specifically for the coming evolution in Seiko professional diver’s watches, the 7C43 (as well as its bigger brother, the 7C46) offered a 7 jeweled gear train, high torque for driving over-sized hands, and dual-rate trimmers for extremely accurate time keeping. Like other Seiko quartz movements of the era, they are completely serviceable, and most, even decades later, are still performing to within factory specifications. Though the Tuna models are easily the “popularity contest” winners of this series, several JDM models not offered to the North American market have become dark horse collectibles for many enthusiasts. The smaller dimensions of the 7C43 allowed for more compact construction overall, and presented those looking for a smaller but equally capable option, the best of both worlds. From the classically styled 6010, to the offset “Giugiaro” 7A00, there’s something for everyone.
We jumped at the chance to get our hands on this early and super rare JDM 6A00 from December of ‘86. Though technically considered a “mid-size” diver, it comes in at a full 39.5mm, not including the crown. Stylistically, it resembles the “Ashtray” divers, but in a much more versatile layout. The case construction is truly impressive. It features a Titanium mid-case, case back, and bezel, and as will all 7C4X divers, the case back and the crystal retaining ring screw down to ensure water resistance. The titanium has a soft sandblasted finish which gives it a color close to that of wet concrete. It just looks tough. At twice the strength of stainless steel and half the weight, it’s also extremely easy to wear. No “wrist fatigue” here. The dial is a sunburst ivory with large luminous plots, and it’s flawless. It’s warm tone is complemented by familiarly styled gold hour and minute hands, and a black and gold “reverse lollipop” second hand. The bezel insert shows very little wear, and the single direction bezel has a satisfying and audible click. The oversized crown screws down tightly with ample threading, and setting functions are very smooth. After service and a fresh battery, its keeping perfect time, and it’s completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal. We’ve paired it with a “Tropic” style strap for a comfortable and versatile finish. A stunning example, it’s sure to earn a regular spot in any rotation.
