1974 Seiko 6138-0040 Automatic Chronograph “Bullhead”
1974 Seiko 6138-0040 Automatic Chronograph “Bullhead”
Seiko's 6138 is the sophomore release to the 6139 and adds a few features lacking on the former. In addition to a rolling 12 hour register for the chronograph, it could now be manually wound at the crown, and the day and date could be quick set independently. The "bullhead" earned it's name when Seiko decided to rotate the movement 90 degrees within the case, and position the crown and chronograph pushers at the top of the case creating a resemblance to a bull's horns. It was available in two color ways, the more commonly seen gradient brown and gold, and this more difficult to acquire black and blue variant. Those that do surface are often fitted with inferior aftermarket dials, hands, and bezel inserts which can make adding an original example to your roster quite the challenge. This stunner from April of ‘74 checks all the boxes. The matte black and khaki blue dial is virtually perfect. Marking the hours are the original luminous plots, which have developed an even creamy patina. The hour and minute hands in black and white are free of chipping or paint loss, and the luminous windows show only a few specks of color at the edges. The bright yellow sweep and register hands are clean and vivid, and snap back to zero when reset. The fixed bezel is free of denting, and the tachymetric insert is deep black with almost no visible wear or fade. The case is unpolished with razor sharp corners, and the factory finishes are still intact. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal and post service is keeping near perfect time. It comes attached to the original tapered “fishbone” bracelet with tight hinges and almost no visible stretching between the links. If a black and blue “Bull” is on your list, this one will not disappoint.
