Ca. 1962 Seiko J13077 Hand Wind “Sea horse” (30 Proof)
A clean, mid-century hand winder should be a staple on any roster, and this early Seahorse “Field Watch” is possibly the perfect example. Housed in a 35mm case eerily similar to the 850 Champion Alpinist, it’s built tough from all stainless steel with a screw down case back and water resistant crown. Short, fat lugs and a beveled bezel frame a silvery white sunburst dial with a glossy lacquer finish. The hours are marked in clean and contrasted Arabic numerals in black print with corresponding luminous plots. The hour and minute hands are massive dauphines with tapered luminous windows, and a lengthy slender sweep counts off the seconds. At 35mm, it’s built for comfort and legibility, but maintains a striking presence on the wrist. It’s completely original, including the acrylic crystal, and the only example like it we’ve ever encountered. The case is unpolished with razor sharp corners, and the embossed etching and “Sea Horse/Crown” logo on the case back are nearly perfect. We’ve paired it with a golden brown suede for a purposeful finish that partners perfectly with the dial patina. Post service, the hand-wound cal. 851 is keeping near perfect time with ample reserve. A true stunner, and a faithful companion, this rare Seahorse is certain to earn a regular spot in any rotation.
