1982 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Turtle” (Singapore)
1982 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Turtle” (Singapore)
If it came down to owning just one watch, there’s no question that Seiko’s 6309-7040/49 is a strong contender. Still their top selling diver to date, it’s a tool watch so perfectly executed, it remains firmly at the top of our list. Balance, contrast, and contouring all neatly assembled into a finished product that is much greater than the sum of its parts. A bare bones beauty that more than proves less can, in fact, be more. This example from January of ‘82 is a great example of how the right amount of wear can make a great tool watch even more appealing. The matte black dial is a jaw dropper. It is absolutely flawless, and its Singaporean provenance denoted by the “MT” dial code is sure to catch the attention of a collector on the hunt. The hour markers are free degradation or discoloration, and like the luminous in the hands, have remained a crisp bright white. The hour, minute, and sweep have all retained their original mirror finish, and are free of oxidation or corrosion. The bezel rotates with a firm click in either direction, and the insert bears some moderate but even wear. Contrasted against the flawless dial, the bezel adds just the right amount of character to this nearly 40 year old tool watch. The case is unpolished with some light wear throughout, but the factory finishes are still visible, and the corners are crisp. Both the case back and crown screw down tightly with ample threading. The 6309A is keeping near perfect time post service, and ready for many more years of reliable service. We’ve paired it with a steel gray “Tropic” style strap thats both versatile, and comfortable for daily wear. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it is a true Seiko icon, and a must have for any collector.
