1984 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Turtle”
1984 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Turtle”
If it came down to owning just one watch, there’s no question that Seiko’s 6309-7040/49 is a strong contender. Still their top selling diver to date, it’s a tool watch so perfectly executed, it remains firmly at the top of our list. Balance, contrast, and contouring all neatly assembled into a finished product that is much greater than the sum of its parts. A bare bones beauty that more than proves that less can be more. This example from July of ‘84 is a prime example of how the right amount of wear can make a great tool watch even more appealing. The matte black dial is stunning. The hour markers are free degradation or discoloration, though the luminous material has developed a soft gray patina throughout. The hands have oxidized, creating an almost matte finished appearance, but have remained free of the usual accompanying corrosion. The bezel rotates with a firm click in either direction, and though the insert shows a fair amount of wear, it’s an even “ghosting” throughout with a denim blue fade. Contrasted against the flawless dial, the bezel adds just the right amount of character to this nearly 37 year old tool watch. The case is unpolished with some light wear throughout, but the factory finishes are still visible, and the corners are crisp. The lower right lug has been lightly engraved with a flourished “R,” and the case back has the initials “RAD” and “R-7477.” Both the case back and crown screw down tightly with ample threading. The 6309A is keeping near perfect time post service, and ready for many more years of reliable service. We’ve paired it with a Z-22 flat vent that’s nearly identical to the original GL-831, and is comfortable for daily wear. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it is a true Seiko icon, and a must have for any collector.
