1986 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Turtle”
1986 Seiko 6309-7049 Automatic 150m Pro Diver “Turtle”
If it came down to owning just one watch, there’s no question that Seiko’s 6309-7040/49 is a strong contender. Still their top selling diver to date, it’s a tool watch so perfectly executed, it remains seated firmly at the top of our list. Balance, contrast, and contouring all neatly assembled into a finished product that is much greater than the sum of its parts. A bare bones beauty that more than proves that less is in fact, more. This “Turtle” from April of ‘86 is a prime example of how the right amount of wear only adds to the appeal of a great tool watch. The flawless matte black dial is stunning. The hour markers are free degradation or discoloration, and the luminous material has remained a crisp, bright white. The hands have held their mirror polished finish, and are free of any oxidation or corrosion. The bezel rotates with a firm click in either direction, and the insert’s “ghostly” gray coloring is mostly even throughout. A count up style, the insert numerals and hashes are still quickly legible at a glance. Contrasted against the dial, the bezel adds just the right amount of character to this 35 year old tool watch. The case is unpolished with only light wear. The factory finishes are still clearly visible, and the corners are crisp. The case back is free of tool marring, and the original markings and “Tsunami” logo are still clear and well defined. Both the case back and crown screw down tightly with ample threading. It’s keeping near perfect time post service, and ready for many more years of reliable service. We’ve paired it with a Tropic Sport style strap that’s both durable and comfortable, and a fitting finish for this great diver. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it is a true Seiko icon, and a must have for any collector.
