Seiko shared the spotlight on the silver screen throughout some of the biggest blockbuster action movies of the 1980’s. From the James Bond and ‘Back to the Future’ franchises, ‘Platoon’ to ‘Predator,’ Ghost and Alien Busters alike, Seiko (often accompanied by Giorgetto Giugiaro) offered cutting edge tech and futuristic design that moved from cast to collector in rapid succession. James Cameron’s ‘Aliens,’ the follow up to Ridley Scott’s singular original, featured four separate Seiko variants alone. Along with two 7A28 chronographs and a digital Pulsemeter, a cousin to the famous “Arnie” diver (‘Commando’ / ‘Predator’) also debuted on the wrist of Paul Reiser’s character, Carter Burke. Serving as a liaison to Ellen Ripley, Burke accompanied a group of Colonial Marines aboard the USS Sulaco in an advisory role that ends in betrayal, and being dragged back to an alien hive for.... reasons. Burke may not have survived, but the popularity of his Seiko H556-5050 lives on. A shared analog/digital display that offers a day/date, dual time-zones, an alarm and hourly chime, 1/100th second chronrograph, and even an incandescent backlight. The large analog display features a matte black mid-dial with lengthy luminous markers and a large triangle at twelve. Framing the dial is a broadly beveled chapter with military time and minute increments that rises to meet a metallic tachymetric scale just beneath the crystal. The case is a hooded tonneau sharp angles, stepped sides, and studded corners. This example from November of ‘82 is fantastic overall. The dial is perfect, and the hands are free of chipping or paint loss. The luminous in the hands does exhibit some scattered color. The tachymetric ring has faded from black to an eye-catching root beer brown, and the case has retained its original sandblasted finish. The original bracelet has been lost to time, but we’ve paired it with a genuine Seiko bracelet from the same period that seamlessly tapers from the lugs, and has a similar finish. It fastens with an original Seiko “SQ” clasp. The movement has been serviced, a new battery installed, and all functions are operating correctly.  It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal and bracelet, and post service it’s keeping perfect time. Burke’s original watch may be lost somewhere on LV-426, but this one is available to Seiko and “Aliens” fans alike.
