Perhaps it doesn’t qualify as a vintage Seiko just yet, but we’re willing to bet this one’s likely already made the list for many. Only in production for around two years, the 4R15-00D0 has already developed a strong cult following of willing buyers with few options. More commonly referred to as the “Spork,” (a loose rearrangement of its Seiko style number SRP043K), it is much like its namesake, serving as a dual purpose pilot and diver. It was the first Seiko pro diver to house the 4R15 after it’s release in ‘08. Though it foregoes hacking or manual winding, it does offer a 50 hour power reserve that I consider redemption for both shortcomings. At 44mm, it’s comparable in size to the 6309 “Turtle,” and the profiles are nearly identical as well. It wears extremely well, and the legibility is unmatched. The dial is matte black with large Arabics at the corners that are separated by well balanced luminous plots between. The hands are massive, and have an undeniable military aesthetic. Framing the dial is a large, deep set chapter with hour and minute hashes, and that gives way to a count up insert that makes the dial and chapter lines feel continuous. This example from August of 2010 is fantastic overall. The dial is immaculate, as are the hands and chapter. The bezel insert shows a heavy ring of wear around the inner edge, and that’s likely due to its convex orientation. The uni-directional bezel has smooth action, and is neatly aligned. The case is unpolished and it’s completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal. Post service, the 4R15 is keeping near perfect time with full reserve. It comes attached to the original Seiko Z-20 crescent vent strap and buckle, as well as the outer and inner box, warranty card, and booklet. A rare full kit for a short lived classic thats becoming increasingly difficult to find. Why choose between spoon and fork, when you can have both.
