1969 Seiko 6106-6040 Automatic 70m Sport Diver “UFO” (Proof)
Seiko's UFO Sport Divers from the late 60's and 70's offer big and bold diver styling with pounds of vintage appeal. The UFO moniker comes from the “saucer” shaped case architecture, and it has long been a favorite of vintage seiko collectors. This very early example from April of ‘69 is among the first UFO sport divers ever produced. It is extremely well preserved with a clean matte black dial boasting crisp markings and luminous markers with an even cream patina. The rotating inner bezel is a flat black "count up" style that rotates freely in either direction via the crown, and shows almost no fading from UV exposure. The hands are the early “frosted” style with a “fat tail” hour and exhibit some coppery oxidation. The sweep has faded from orange to a bright honey gold that’s free of chipping or paint loss. The factory circular brush finish on the case is still visible, and it’s topped with a polished edge bezel with flat black inlay. We’ve paired it with an olive drab “rally tropic” style strap for a period fit and finish. It’s completely original including a NOS replacement hardlex crystal, and the hacking 6106B driving the hands is keeping near perfect time post service. The date can be quickset by pressing the crown, and the day is semi-quickset. Versatile appeal and a work horse calibre come together in a classic sport diver that’s as robust as it is reliable.
