The first Bell-Matics were released in November of 1966, and over the next 12 years a wide variety of styles and color combinations would guarantee that those looking for a robust wrist alarm with undeniable presence could find exactly that. Seiko’s 4005 and 4006 calibre movements were available in 17j export and 27j domestic market versions (there’s even short lived 21j variant), both of which offer incredible reliability decades after production. From classic dress styles to colorful casuals, there’s a “Bell” to suit any taste. At 42mm, the broad cushion shaped case of the 6001 is a noteworthy departure from the typically tame and classic designs throughout the Bell-Matic line. Often referred to as the “UFO Bell,” its sloping contours, undeniable presence, and lack of availability make it a must have for collectors. This example from January of 1970 is packed with colorful character. The dial is a matte lapis blue with a lacquer finish, and applied black-tipped baguettes with luminous steps. Framing the dial is a bright gold alarm bezel with black trim and a large glossy black cursor and luminous indicator. The dial finish, hands and markers exhibit the light oxidation from age and exposure that seems a common attribute of the UFO variant, however, the dial color beneath the lacquer is even and without fading. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service, is keeping near perfect time. The date can be quickset by pressing the alarm toggle, and the day (Spanish only) can be semi quickset via the crown. The bell has a bright and crisp tone, and the cursor has been carefully aligned for setting accuracy. We’ve paired it with a smooth gray suede with a golden khaki stitch for a seamless and comfortable finish, and this beast of a “Bell” is sure to be the loudest member of any lineup.
