For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. For collectors, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From July of 1973, this stunner is exactly what we mean. The dial is a crisp navy blue with a velvety textured finish and virtually flawless. The luminous material on the markers is the original, and has just begun to develop a light even patina. The rotating inner bezel has faded to an even ashen gray, and the silver markings are still crisp and easily legible. The hour and minute batons have retained their bright polished finish, and only slight color is visible in the original luminous windows. The chronograph hands are a fiery orange that is both complementary, and in perfect contrast to the dial. The outer bezel in crisp, metallic red and blue shows only moderate wear, and a faint even fade throughout. The case is unpolished with some light signs of wear, though the original finishes are still clearly visible. The chronograph functions are snappy and responsive, and post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a smooth midnight navy leather with red stitching that partners perfectly with the bezel, and provides a comfortable fit and finish on the wrist. Completely original aside from a replacement crystal, it’s an absolute head turner that’s sure to be the new front runner on any roster.
