1978 Seiko 6138-0049 Automatic Chronograph “Bullhead”
1978 Seiko 6138-0049 Automatic Chronograph “Bullhead”
Seiko's 6138 was the sophomore release to the 6139 and added a few features lacking on the former. In addition to a rolling 12 hour register for the chronograph, it could now be manually wound at the crown, and the day and date could be quick set independently. The "bullhead" earned it's nickname when Seiko decided to rotate the movement 90 degrees within the case, and position the crown and chronograph pushers at the top of the case creating some resemblance to a bull's horns. At nearly 44mm, it is truly a beast befitting of its horns, and the gradient brown dial, gold sub registers and "root beer" bezel offer an excess of 1970's appeal. This example from May of ‘78 makes it easy to see why the “Bullhead” remains a list topper for vintage Seiko enthusiasts. The dial is near perfect with only a few light blemishes in the lacquer finish of the sub registers. The original luminous markers are free of degradation, and have developed a light, even patina throughout. The hour and minute hands show no chipping or paint loss, and the chronograph sweep is still a vivid and bright yellow. The bezel insert shows only light wear, and has faded to a golden honey color that contrasts beautifully against the dial. The case is unpolished with the original factory finishes still intact, and the lines and corners are sharp. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and comes attached to the original “Fishbone” bracelet. It’s keeping near perfect time post service, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. Grab this bull by the horns before it’s gone for good.
