1991 JDM Seiko 7002-700J Automatic 150m Pro Diver (Pepsi)
1991 JDM Seiko 7002-700J Automatic 150m Pro Diver (Pepsi)
As production of the 6309 ended in 1988, Seiko introduced it’s next generation of 150m Sport Divers by way of the 7002. It is the direct predecessor to the SKX line, and owning one can feel like the perfect blend of old and new. An original example of this particular model however, can be nearly impossible track down. The 700J is the JDM variant, and as such was never available to outside markets. That paired with the fact that a large percentage of the 7002’s currently available have been fitted with aftermarket dials, hands, bezel inserts, and even movements, an untouched JDM version has become something of a unicorn. And then there’s this one from May of ‘91. In near NOS condition, it’s clearly the nicest example I’ve ever seen. It’s completely original right down to the hardlex crystal and Z-22 flat vent strap. The crystal does have a hairline scratch between the 7 and 8 o’clock markers, but I made the easy decision to leave it just as it is. Post service, the movement is keeping near perfect time, and the “Pepsi” bezel rotates smoothly in either direction with a firm, satisfying click. In recent years, the 7002 has become a dark horse for collectors of vintage Seiko divers. Prices have exploded, and all original examples are all but disappearing from the market. A near mint JDM model? Well, we don’t expect it will be around for long.
