1994 Seiko 7002-7020 Automatic 200m Pro Diver (Transitional/Steel Bezel)
1994 Seiko 7002-7020 Automatic 200m Pro Diver (Transitional/Steel Bezel)
As production of the 6309 ended in 1988, Seiko introduced it’s next generation of 150m Sport Divers by way of the 7002. Production for these models ran from 1988, all the way through 1995. In the latter half of ‘94, the evolution from 7002 to SKX became a bit clearer as a gain of 50m brought the depth rating to 200, and the bezel, now a uni-directional style, employed a silky smooth spring mechanism in place of the old bi-directional “ball bearing” style. It is the direct predecessor to the SKX line of today, and is typically referred to as a “transitional” 7002. Owning one can feel like the perfect blend of old and new. This example from July of ‘94 is an absolute stunner. The case is unpolished, and shows almost no visible wear. It’s original finishes and bevels are still razor sharp, and the bezel is the atypical full steel version with knurled edges and “count up” black inlay numbers and hashes. The dial is flawless. Originally matte black, it has faded to uniform dove gray that, along with the with the graying patina of the large luminous plots, gives this one a uniquely irresistible finish. In contrast, the steep chapter has remained a vivid black with stark white hour and minute hashes. The hands are recognizable in design, looking mostly like those of previous models, however the sweep is the reverse “lollipop”forwarded on to the SKX references. There is no degradation or discoloration in the luminous, and the original polished finish is free of oxidation or corrosion. A large screw down crown sits at the 4 o’clock position between two protruding crown guards. The case back bears the signature “Tsunami” logo at center, and along with the crown, screws down tightly with ample threading. It’s completely original aside from a replacement mineral crystal, and a stunning example of the last of Seiko’s fourth generation divers. The 7002 is a date only calibre, and post service, this one is keeping near perfect time. It comes attached to a replacement flat vent black rubber strap fitted with an original stainless steel Seiko buckle. With so many 7002 examples fitted with modified and aftermarket parts, opportunities to own an untouched original in this condition are becoming increasingly rare. Don’t wait on this one.
