1963 Seiko J13044E Automatic “Seikomatic” 30m 20j
“Seikomatic” has become synonymous with clean mid-century design and timeless architecture. This “time only” example from June of 1963 is a sophisticated casual that proves a minimalist approach doesn’t mean foregoing nuance. The dial is a silvery white sunburst beneath a slick lacquer finish, and is set with polished and beveled baguette markers. The hour and minute hands are polished and beveled dauphines that are easily legible at a glance, and a thin uniform sweep counts the seconds. With no date aperture, and just three lines of centered text, the layout is in perfect balance. A round, low profile case, with long tapered and beveled lugs make for a classic and versatile finish. The case back is embossed with the “Dolphin” motif in keeping with it’s water resistant design, but like most, the etched finish has worn heavily over the last half-century. Driving the hands is Seiko’s 603 movement. A solid and reliable self-winder that would later be renamed the 6201, and serve as the foundation for the many 62XX variations to come. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with an olive suede strap for a “go to” casual that transitions effortlessly from week to weekend, and is sure to be an easy addition to any roster.
