1968 Seiko 6106-8100 Automatic 70m Sport Diver (Proof)
1968 Seiko 6106-8100 Automatic 70m Sport Diver (Proof)
Seiko's earliest sport divers are the quintessential tool watch featuring understated and minimalist layouts with a militaristic edge, and bulletproof construction. To the hard core collector, they are sought after relics of Seiko history to be appreciated for their simplicity and reliability. Only in production for a few short years, complete examples in top condition are in short supply. This one from September of 1968 is a monochromatic masterpiece. The case is a contoured tonneau that's unpolished with sharp corners, and its factory finishes still clearly visible. It's fitted with a rotating outer “friction” style bezel and a count up insert with light, even wear. The insert printing remains in sharp contrast to the matte silver backing, and with only some minor points of visible fading. Beneath it is a rich charcoal sunburst dial with a glossy lacquer finish and applied luminous indexes. It’s beautifully balanced with only two lines of printed text, and a framed day/date window at three o’clock. The hour and minute hands are long and lean batons, and the slender sweep nearly touches the minute track. They have retained their bright polished finish with almost no visible oxidation. The 6106B features hacking seconds and a quick set function for the date. The day can be semi-quick set via the crown. It’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal and post service, is keeping near perfect time. It comes attached to the original flat five link bracelet for a seamless fit and finish. An absolute stunner of a stripped down diver, this one is sure to be a fast favorite on any roster.
