2010 Seiko 7S36-03C0 Automatic 5 Sports “Sea Urchin” (SNZF19)
While it technically qualifies as a modern Seiko, the “Sea Urchin” was discontinued in 2021 to the chagrin of many enthusiasts. For over a decade, it was a core member of Seiko’s 5 Sports Diver lineup, and through solid construction, a robust movement, and great styling, it remained a solid choice for weekend warriors wanting more for less. Add that to Seiko’s storied history of orange dialed divers, and this low production variant has quickly become a hard to source collectible. This example from July of ‘10 is a classic tool diver that’s covered in color and contrast. The case design is signature seiko with beefy lugs, well proportioned height, and a near “universally perfect” 41mm diameter. The dial is a slick gloss orange with oversized and framed luminous markers, balanced text and badging, and a framed day/date window at three. The hands can’t be missed. Long and broad polished “swords” with black hilts and expansive luminous windows. The sweep is a black reverse “lollipop” that reaches just beyond the hour markers. Framing the dial is a steep orange chapter with thick black hashes that creates depth and a seamless transition from dial to bezel. The uni-directional bezel has deep knurling for an easy grip, and smooth action. The count-up insert is in great shape over all, but does display the typical paint wear along the inner rim. Behind the exhibition case back, the workhorse 7S36 is visible, and post service is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a gray “Tropic Sport” style strap for some complementary color, and proper “tool” finish. It’s unpolished and completely original including the hardlex crystal. If you’re looking for tomorrow’s vintage “must have,” today, this beast on a budget is ready to offer decades of faithful service in the gap.
