The 45KS was developed by the Daini Division of Seiko to compete head to head with 61GS of their in-house rivals at Suwa. A stunning piece machinery that clipped along at 36000 bph, was manually wound, and were the last of the hand built movements for the KS line. In fact, they were also the last 36,000 movements Daini would produce. Many were rated as chronometers, and for any avid collector, a 45KS is a must have as not only were they beautifully precise, they were delivered in memorable style across only a handful of styles. One of my personal favorites is the 4502-8000. The 2 in the reference number signifies the addition of a date function. It's an instant change date advanced by a complicated, albeit ingenious mechanism that one can only truly appreciate after reassembling it. The case is a cushion or "pillow" design with a polished top and brushed chamfered edge, and the case back is set with a gold KS medallion at center. This example from April of '69 is a rare treat, even by vintage standards. Most often, this reference is seen with a cross-hatched linen dial in white, however there was another dial variation, and when the opportunity to acquire the matte dove gray sunburst was presented, it was not to be missed. It is impossible to capture the depth in photographs. It is a rich texture that appears almost soft to the touch, and it is absolutely pristine. Paired with finely detailed applied markers, and tapered baton hands with black inlay, it is easily the most distinguishable model in the line. In addition, the case is unpolished with the original finishes intact, and the case back is sharp with no degradation to the gold medallion. On light brown distressed leather, it has a timeless and relevant style that isn't often seen, even today.
