Not your average Sportsman... Like other models produced during the mid 1960's, the Sportsman saw Seiko throw a couple of curve balls in the way of some seriously rare dial configurations that even the most experienced watch hound will have trouble turning up. There are at least three in the Sportsman lineup; one that looks eerily similar to the Champion Alpinist, and this variant which was more commonly available in black. This hand winder from June of '66 is a rare ivory sunburst finished in lacquer, and it only gets better from there. The large applied markers sport oversized luminous plots that have developed an incredibly pleasing creamy patina that is mirrored in the baton hour and minute hands, and in the frame near the tip of the "62MAS styled" second hand. The case has great proportions, and wears a bit larger than its 36mm diameter. The large crown makes for easy winding and setting, and the case back has retained all of its deeply stamped (rather than etched) insignia. At center is the Crowned Seahorse, indicating it to be a manually wound "waterproof" timepiece. On a rich dark brown distressed leather, this one's a real stunner, and not likely to be repeated!
