The first Bell-Matics were released to the public in 1966, and were at that time the very first automatic wrist alarm watches with a central rotor. Seiko continued production of the line for another 12 years with a wide array of styles ranging from colorful casuals, to refined classics. This example from August of ‘69 is the beast of the “Bells,” and is more commonly referred to by collectors as the “UFO.” A rare variant to begin with, this is the only JDM version we’ve ever seen, so naturally we had to have it. As high jeweled watch movements were considered a luxury item in the late 1960’s, tariffs made them to expensive to import to the US. As a result, these 27j Bell-Matics were only available to the Japanese domestic market. The 42mm saucer shaped case speaks to the origin of the “UFO” moniker, and makes this variant unique against its more classically styled brethren. The dial is a flat charcoal gray with a velvety appearance, and a subtle sunburst finish underneath. The markers are applied bars with black step downs and luminous tips. The hands are slender polished batons, and the luminous material has aged to rich khaki patina. The inner alarm bezel is a metallic black with a 60 minute countdown, and a wide red cursor with a luminous pointer. The bell has a bright, crisp ring that is sure to get your attention. It’s unpolished, and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service it’s keeping near perfect time. The alarm functions are smooth and carefully aligned for accuracy. We’ve paired it with a desert tan RAF NATO for contrast and comfort, and we’re sure this one will be a ‘go to’ on any roster.
