1973 Seiko 6139-6002 Automatic Chronograph “Pogue”
1973 Seiko 6139-6002 Automatic Chronograph “Pogue”
For vintage Seiko lovers, perhaps no series is as instantly recognizable as the 6139-600X models that have become synonymous with the introduction of this historic movement. From the “Pepsi” tachymetric bezel, the the “H-Link” bracelet, they serve as the embodiment of Seiko’s efforts to deliver, with style, their first automatic chronograph. Today, these models are often referred to as, and fall under the umbrella of the “Pogue” models due to their association to Col. William Pogue and his now historic yellow dialed variant. Available in three colorways (Yellow, Silver, and Blue), it goes without saying that no matter your preference, they are all memorable in their own right and the right example would be a highlight in any collection. From June of ‘73, this is an amazing example of an absolute icon. The golden yellow dial is stunning, and it’s sunburst finish makes it appear as though rays of light are being shot across it’s lacquered surface as it’s viewed from various angles. Due to the process in which these dials were manufactured, oxygen can penetrate the lacquer finish and get to the layer of silver beneath the paint and cause oxidation. This often appears as dark specks on the dial, and commonly a dark ring around the sub register. On this example, a single ‘freckle’ is visible at left center on the dial, and there is a light ring around portions of the sub register. The hour and minute hands sport a mirror finish, and the original luminous material throughout has developed only the slightest even patina. The chronograph hands are bright red and free of chipping or fading, and the inner rotating bezel is a rich vivid yellow. The case is crisp and unpolished with the original finishes still intact. The outer bezel is a rich metallic red and blue and shows only slight wear. Attached is the original non-tapered “H” link bracelet and original end pieces. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are smooth and responsive. Aside from a replacement crown and crystal, it’s completely original, and as clean original examples become increasingly difficult to track down, the Pogue has reached near “grail” status among collectors. Don’t miss this opportunity to add this historic Seiko to your own roster.
