1969 Seiko 6119-8240 “5” Automatic Day/Date
1969 Seiko 6119-8240 “5” Automatic Day/Date
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of collecting vintage watches is the opportunity to own something rare and perhaps unique that’s sure to simultaneously inspire envy and appreciation among fellow enthusiasts. On occasion, this can even be done at an entry level price point. Such is the case with this 6119-8240. It’s not an especially rare variant, nor does it have a compelling story with which to amaze listeners at a get together. It does, however, have the one thing that appeals to most collectors, and makes it incredibly exclusive. Unimaginably rich patina... Patina is a word that is often used in our world to describe less than desirable characteristics, and on some occasions, even abuse. This, is not that. This is actual patina. A combination of exposure and aging that can’t be bought, and is ever apparent when forced. This simple day/date Automatic happened to be in the right place for the right amount of time, and the result is a beautiful mouth watering patina. For reference, this dial started life as a crisp silver sunburst, truly handsome in it’s own right, but time and the right combination of elements has brought it here. Now somewhat resembling some distant planet, or exotic sunset, it has become greater than the sum of it’s parts, and the definition of true patina. The shading of the browns and oranges against the rich metallic blue trim heightens it even further creating striking contrast that’s hard to look away from, and impossible to ignore. The 6119 driving the hands is keeping near perfect time post service, and it’s completely original aside from a replacement crystal. We’ve paired it with a rich blue “seatbelt” NATO to complement the blue trim, and provide comfort on the wrist.
