1977 Seiko 4006-6070 Bell-Matic 17j Automatic
1977 Seiko 4006-6070 Bell-Matic 17j Automatic
The first Bell-Matics were released to the public in 1966, and were at that time the very first automatic wrist alarm watches with a central rotor. Seiko continued production of the line for another 12 years with a wide array of styles ranging from colorful casuals, to refined classics. This example from June of 1977 sports sleek architecture surrounding a clean, classic dial layout. The dial is perfect, and features a subtle sunburst under a lacquer finish with applied baguettes in black. The hands are thin, polished batons striped to match, and a slender sweep ticking off the seconds. A wide alarm cursor ring in silver in black frames the dial, and a large cutaway on either side of the indicator reveals a hidden minute track underneath. The case tapers on either side to a sloping hooded lug for a sharp and tight appearance on the wrist. The bezel sits recessed allowing for a thinner overall profile, allowing this “Bell” to fit comfortably under cuff and coat. A versatile black and white beauty, we’ve paired it with a tan leather with black stitching for contrast and a clean finish. The 4006 movement is keeping near perfect time post service, and the bell has a bright and crisp ring. It’s unpolished and all original aside from a replacement crystal, and ready for a regular spot in any rotation.
