NOS, or New Old Stock, for vintage watch collectors is rarely synonymous with affordable, especially when referencing a piece thats nearly a half century old and is part of a full kit, meaning all of the original materials that accompanied the watch at the retail level, are still present. This is our opportunity to present the exception to that ideal, and offer a NOS, full kit piece delivered at a price that keeps this experience enjoyable. This 6119 from January of 1970 is a true time capsule. It was never sold beyond it’s purchase from Seiko by the retailer. These situations are gifts from the watch gods that allow us to experience a moment that never happened more than 50 years ago. They are the rare chance to have something that very few collectors or enthusiasts can own. I’ll gladly admit that no matter the brand, model, or style, the opportunity to handle NOS goods gets my heart racing, so the opportunity to acquire this one was not going to be missed. The watch itself is immaculate. There is almost no brassing in the finish, which means it was stored in a cool, dry environment all this time. The only marks in the finish are light production scratches, or from being handled in and out of a showcase by a sales person from a generation ago. The dial is a silver sunburst with a glossy lacquer finish set with engraved applied markers, and an applied “5” badge below the Seiko logo. The hands are sharply tapered dauphines with perfect luminous windows, free of any degradation or discoloration. The case architecture features short, chopped lugs, and a clean, crisp bevel from corner to corner. The case back is a screw down style that still has the blue production sticker in place, along with the red and gold JWC inspection sticker. It’s attached to the original two-tone bracelet, a flat five link with split steel hinges, and the clasp has a perfect and unmarked gold satin finish. As I wanted this watch to be wearable and reliable, I carefully removed and serviced the movement, and it is now keeping near perfect time. It is completely original including the domed acrylic crystal, and as “full kit” implies, it will ship in the original acetate inner box with navy blue lining. The blue Seiko 5 hang tag with a rolling day wheel, the gold “Modern Masters of Time” hang tag, and the retailer’s original price tag are present as well. It will be carefully packaged inside of the original our paper box with operating instructions, and unsigned warranty paperwork. An interesting and enjoyable addition to any collection, this one is sure to be a conversation starter.
