If you were going to rid New York City of ghosts, poltergeists, and stop-motion terror dogs in 1984, then only the latest tech available would satisfy those demands. Namely a P.K.E. Meter, a Proton Pack, and of course (three out of four Ghostbusters agree) the Seiko Voice Note. That’s right... Spengler, Stantz, and Venkman knew that busting ghosts undoubtedly required the help of an awesome Seiko watch. A watch at the outer limits of the cutting edge. Enter the M516-4009. By today’s standards it may not seem impressive, but at the time, there was nothing like this display of showmanship and technical prowess from Seiko. Along with the time, day, date, month, alarm, hourly chime, 1/100th second chronograph, and incandescent backlight for nighttime ghost busting, it featured a built in voice recorder that allowed for either a four or eight second memo that could be played back through the built in speaker. By pressing the “Record” button, you could speak into the integrated microphone, and that phone number you needed to remember would be stored digitally on two 16k solid state RAM memory modules. A subsequent press of the “Play” button would retrieve that information as many times as you like. A niche feature? Maybe. But more than 36 years later, I constantly save voice memos on my phone, and text myself important bits of information for later use. Perhaps Seiko was peering into the info deluged future with this one. Outside of it’s technical capabilities, it was also partly constructed with the materials of the future. In addition to plastic and stainless steel, portions of the case were built using carbon fiber. It’s easy to see how it made the cut for a group of Columbia University ghost fighting scientists. As with any new tech, it was quite expensive at launch, and production was limited so there aren’t many still available today. Most of those that are wore worn heavily, and the PVD coating on the bracelet has taken a beating. You can imagine our excitement when the opportunity to acquire a NOS example with no signs of wear was presented. It even has the original hang tag and JWC inspection sticker still attached. Sadly, the box and papers weren’t present, but for movie and watch enthusiasts alike, this is an incredible find. A fresh battery has been installed and all functions are operating correctly, including the backlight. We’ll be sure to include a personalized message to the new owner that you can play back as often as you’d like!
