1975 Seiko 6139-7080 Automatic Chronograph
1975 Seiko 6139-7080 Automatic Chronograph
With styling and design to suit any taste, Seiko’s 6139 line up has something for everyone. Though we typically lean towards the the sport driven layouts, the occasional casual crossover can keep things interesting. Case in point, this example from June of 1975. Blending color and geometrics, the 7080 is a fun departure from classic design that still delivers on performance. The dial is matte black with a recessed silver sub register, framed by a bright blue minute track. The markers are applied luminous baguettes that add a bit of contrast, and great balance. The hour and minute hands appear to almost float above the dial in black and white, and a striking red/orange sweep pairs perfectly with the blue. A steep black chapter with a white tachymetric scale adds depth and provides a seamless transition from dial to case. The absence of a bezel works well with the case architecture. The acrylic crystal is pressure fit into the case allowing its hexagonal shape to stand out, and lends to a lower profile than many of the other 6139 models. The top surface of the case is finished in a “north to south” brush, and the outward beveled edges are polished to create an almost faceted appearance. The original bracelet was not present, but the narrow lug gap doesn’t allow for many strap options. We’ve chosen to pair it with a period correct genuine Seiko bracelet from another model that we think suits this one nicely. It has a similar mixed finish to the case, and a taper that provides a nice continuity. It’s unpolished and aside from the bracelet and a replacement crystal, it’s complete original. Post service, the 6139B is keeping near perfect time, and the chronograph functions are crisp and responsive. If you’re looking for some well executed variation in your roster, this one will fill the gap nicely.
