As important as any watch can be too the efficacy of a brand, the 6309-7040/9 is a perfect delivery of intention. It's as rugged and hard wearing as it is aesthetically satisfying. Even as the first "Turtles" released in 1976 turned 41 this year, one thing is certain... they don't get old. This example from January of 1984 was one that we just couldn’t pass on. Most collectors are familiar with the three major dial codes for this model, but there was fourth that, even if you are aware of it, you’ve likely never seen one. The original is of course, the 704 L T “Suwa.” That was followed by the Hong Kong 704 X T, and the Singapore 704 M T. The latter of which is considered quite rare in its own right. The fourth dial code, and likely the missing piece for those trying to secure the quadfecta, is the Malaysia 704 N T.  I have only ever seen one other in person, and unfortunately, is was not for sale. So if you like your vintage watches to have obscure trivia in tow, or you’ve been hunting this elusive testudine, your opportunity has arrived. The matte black dial is in great condition overall with fairly even patina throughout the hour plots. There is a bit of darkening visible on the 9 o’clock marker. The hour and minute hands have been replaced with genuine NOS parts as the originals had been damaged by corrosion. The mineral crystal was replaced as well. The day (English/Arabic) and date can be quickset via the crown. The bezel rotates smoothly in either direction with a uniform click, and the original bezel insert only shows light wear. The case is unpolished with the original finishes still visible, and the case back and crown screw down properly. We’ve paired it with a Z-22 flat vent rubber strap for a finish that’s close to the original, and looks great on the wrist. The 6309 is keeping near perfect time post service, and ready for many more years of dependable service.
