1963 Seiko MAS14H M55 Sea Lion Automatic Self Dater (395/6205-8960)
With an array of marine life icons used by Seiko to describe and identify the water resistance of a specific watch or collection of watches, perhaps none leave as many questions for collectors as Seiko’s Sea Lion variants. Often attached to the Weekdater and Selfdater lines, and considered by some to be a close relative of the Seikomatic family, little definitive information exists about this particular subset of vintage Seikos. What’s not so hazy is their undeniable mid-century styling, and timeless appeal. This M55 Sea Lion from October of ’63 is mouth watering example of why collectors go back to this well time and time again. The case and dial layout are perfectly symmetrical with the crown recessed at three, and the case, lugs, and bezel serve as a frame to highlight a mesmerizing dark silver sunburst dial. The radial graining is heavy enough to create an appearance of depth from edge to center, and this is heightened by the division of the dial into quadrants by the crosshair printing. The applied markers are standing monuments with beveled “cross” tops and a polished finish that add to the light show. The hour and minute hands are polished and beveled daggers that are easily legible over the dial, and a long a lean sweep counts the seconds. Minimal printing, a seiko badging, and a framed date window at three keep the layout in balance, and let the dial finish take center stage. It’s unpolished and completely original aside from a replacement crystal, and post service, the self winding 395 (6205) is keeping near perfect time. We’ve paired it with a khaki suede for a softer finish that highlights the dial and provides a comfortable fit and finish on the wrist. A mid-century beauty with touch of mystery, it’s bound to earn a regular spot in any rotation.
