1974 Seiko 6117-6410 Automatic Navigator Timer (GMT)
1974 Seiko 6117-6410 Automatic Navigator Timer (GMT)
Seiko's sophomore effort at a pure pilot's watch came in the form of the 6117-6410. Carrying the same name as its predecessor, this Navigator Timer is a classic GMT with several points of improvement over the first iteration. With a broader tonneau style case, the 24 hour bezel has been repositioned to frame the dial, and is split into two segmented halves: red for daylight hours, and blue for night. Rotated via the crown rather than as an exterior bezel, it is less likely to be jarred out of position, and is protected from wear. The dial in a matte black is contrasted for legibility by long overt white luminous markers. Tracking a second time zone is made easy by the "dog-legged" and bright red, slaved 24 hour hand. The 6117B adds a hacking function (seconds setting) not available on the first model, and is a robust and reliable caliber built for durable longevity. This example from September of ’71 is an absolute stunner. The dial and hands are virtually flawless. The inner bezel is perfect with no color fade or chipping of the paint, and rotates smoothly in either direction. The case is crisp and unpolished, and it’s completely original including the hand polished acrylic crystal. Post service, it’s keeping near perfect time, and we’ve paired it with a “Tropic Sport” style strap for a versatile fit and finish. A dream on the wrist, and up for any occasion, this GMT is a timeless tool watch that’s sure to earn a regular spot in any rotation.
