1982 Seiko H556-5060 Quartz Ana/Digi Chronograph/Alarm “Reverse Burke”
1982 Seiko H556-5060 Quartz Ana/Digi Chronograph/Alarm “Reverse Burke”
Building on the enormous success of the original H558 “Arnie,” the worlds first dive watch to feature an analog and digital display with a chronograph and alarm, the equally capable H556 was introduced, and the pair became the benchmark for shared analog/digital displays. Arnie’s diver saw no shortage of screen time during the 1980’s, and can be prominently seen in ‘Predator’ and ‘Commando,” but another H556 also earned some screen time on the wrist of Paul Reiser’s character, Carter Burke in James Cameron’s 1986 film “Aliens.’ Serving as a liaison to Ellen Ripley, Burke accompanied a group of Colonial Marines aboard the USS Sulaco in an advisory role that ends in betrayal, and being dragged back to an alien hive for.... reasons. Burke may not have survived, but the popularity of his Seiko H556-5050 lives on. This H556-5060, is a color way counterpoint to Burke’s own black dialed variant, and is sometimes referred to as the “Reverse Burke.” While it may not carry the same cache, this example from October of ’82 is about as good as it gets. Unpolished and completely original, including the hardlex crystal, it’s in specatcular condition, and hard to imagine its got 42 years under its belt. A shared analog/digital display that offers a day/date, dual time-zones, an alarm and hourly chime, 1/100th second chronrograph, and even an incandescent backlight. The large analog display features a linen silver mid-dial with a north to south grain and applied markers with black striping. Framing the dial is a broadly beveled chapter marked in 10 minute increments that rises to meet a matte black ring with 24 hour time just beneath the crystal. The hour and minute hands are gloss black batons that are easy to spot, and a polished sweep ticks off the seconds. The case is a hooded tonneau sharp angles, stepped sides, and studded corners. Like the dial, it is finished in a north to south brush that’s still intact. It comes attached to the original tapered five link bracelet with the original Seiko “SQ” clasp. The movement has been serviced, a new battery installed, and all functions are operating correctly.
