1972 Seiko 6139-6002 Automatic Chronograph “Pogue” (Resist)

For vintage Seiko fans, it doesn't get any more iconic than the "Pogue." After purchasing his own 6139 at an exchange on base, Col. William Pogue trained for 6 months with his trusty new companion strapped to his wrist. It proved a trustworthy and reliable tool throughout rigorous simulations, and so was taken along side his NASA issued Omega Speedmaster Pro when he began his actual mission aboard Skylab. Today, “Pogue” is a catch all term used to describe any of the dozen or so variants within the 6139-60XX family, but for hardcore collectors, a golden sunburst “Resist” dial is the true grail. That said, Pogue technically wore a 6005 model rather than the 6002. Identical in manufacture, the last digit is different only to denote the market in which it was to be sold: 6005 in North America, and 6002 to the European market. There were also two yellow dial code variants produced as well. The Colonel’s watch contained the lighter yellow 6009T version, and the other was the deeper yellow 6030R seen here. Along with a single word of text and jewel count notation, these are subtle differences to be sure, but worth noting for many enthusiasts. Pogue’s personal Seiko was sold at auction several years ago to one very fortunate new owner, but this example from January of ‘72 is as close as we could find to the original... albeit, in much better condition. The deep, golden yellow sunburst dial is stunning, and the original luminous material on the hands and markers shows only slight signs of aging. The rotating inner bezel is a bright, vivid yellow, and the hour, minute, and chronograph hands are free of corrosion, chipping or paint loss. The bezel insert shows very little wear in the way of marring or scratches, but has faded heavily with age. The blue is an almost turquoise, and the red, a pinkish orange. It is truly unique and only adds to the allure of this amazing piece.  The case is unpolished showing only slight wear, and the original finishes are still intact. In the only instance we’ve ever witnessed, this watch was fitted with a Swedish/English day disk! A small but noteworthy detail that sets this watch apart even further. We’ve attached it to a smooth brown leather with “Pepsi” stitching that offers a comfortable fit, and brings the dial and bezel into focus. It is a completely original example fitted with a NOS correct hardlex crystal, and would be an amazing addition to any collection, Seiko or otherwise!
