1975 JDM Seiko 6138-0030 5 Sports Speed Timer "Kakume" (Champagne)
1975 JDM Seiko 6138-0030 5 Sports Speed Timer "Kakume" (Champagne)
In Japanese, "Kakume" translates roughly to "square eyes." And like two square, matte black eyes, the sub registers of this massive chronograph stare back at you from their recessed position beneath the golden champagne dial. This example from June of ‘75 is unreal. The dial has evenly faded from age and UV exposure, and captivates from every angle. Its satin sunburst finish is framed in butterscotch orange, and set with polished applied markers striped in black. The square sub registers are a deep black, and matte finished with white and gold print. The hour and minute hands are unique to this JDM “5 Sports” variant, and are tapered polished batons with black striping. The chronograph hands have retained their original bright orange hue and standout beautifully against the surrounding black and gold. The matching bezel insert is very well preserved showing only minimal wear and uniform color. The case is unpolished, and the original finishes and corners are still quite crisp. Aside from a replacement crystal, it is completely original, and post service, it’s keeping near perfect time. The chronograph functions are smooth and responsive with a snappy reset. We’ve paired it with a smooth cognac leather with black stitching that showcases the dial and provides comfort on the wrist. As the demand for vintage Seiko chronographs continues to grow, opportunities to acquire JDM models in this condition are few and far between to say the least. Don’t wait on this one.
